Denture Types for Any Situation

Modern dentures come in many different shapes and sizes to fit the unique needs of your oral health situation. A complete denture consists of a removable, full set of upper or lower teeth mounted in a natural-colored acrylic base that fits tightly over your gums. An upper denture will cover the roof of your mouth while the lower denture must have an opening so your tongue can move and rest normally. A partial denture consists of natural-looking, removable teeth mounted to a metal frame that fits around adjacent teeth for stabilization.

A full denture is a removable dental appliance designed to replace all of the teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, or both. Full dentures are used when a person has lost all of their natural teeth due to factors like tooth decay, gum disease, or injury. These dentures consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that supports a full set of artificial teeth made from materials like resin or porcelain.

A partial denture is a removable dental appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, while still allowing a person to keep their remaining natural teeth. Unlike full dentures, which replace an entire set of teeth, partial dentures fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and help prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of place.

You may be ready for dentures if you’re experiencing several vital signs related to tooth loss and oral health decline. Significant tooth loss, whether due to decay, gum disease, or trauma, is one of the leading indicators that dentures may be necessary to restore chewing, speaking, and your overall smile. If you’re having trouble eating certain foods or speaking clearly due to missing teeth, dentures can help improve oral function.

Chronic tooth pain, loose teeth, or recurring dental problems like frequent extractions or fillings can signal that it’s time to consider dentures. Additionally, if the appearance of your teeth is affecting your confidence, dentures can offer both functional and aesthetic benefits. Consulting with a dentist will help you assess your oral health and determine if full, partial, or implant-supported dentures are the right option.

Implant-supported dentures are dentures that are anchored to dental implants surgically placed into the jawbone, offering significantly more stability compared to traditional dentures. Unlike regular dentures that rest on the gums, these are secured by implants, preventing movement and providing greater comfort while eating, speaking, and performing daily activities. Implant-supported dentures can be either removable (snap-on) or fixed (permanent), depending on the patient’s preference and dental needs.

They also help preserve jawbone health by stimulating the bone, preventing the bone loss often associated with traditional dentures. This option provides a more natural feel, improved functionality, and enhanced confidence for individuals who have lost all their teeth but have enough healthy jawbone to support implants.

To properly care for your dentures, clean them daily by rinsing after meals and brushing with a denture-specific cleaner. Soak them overnight in water or a cleaning solution to keep them moist and maintain their shape.

Handle dentures carefully to avoid damage and never use hot water, which can warp them. Additionally, brush your gums, tongue, and mouth daily to maintain oral health. Regular dental checkups are important to ensure a good fit and address any issues, as dentures may need adjustments or relining over time.

Dentures typically last between 5 to 10 years, depending on factors like how well they are cared for, the quality of the materials used, and changes in your mouth over time. Daily wear and tear and exposure to food and beverages can lead to staining or gradual deterioration of the dentures.

Additionally, as your gums and jawbone naturally change shape, dentures may become loose or uncomfortable, requiring adjustments or relining. Proper care, including regular cleaning and dental checkups, can help extend the life of your dentures. Still, eventually, they will need to be replaced to ensure they fit well and function properly.
