Tooth decay, also known as a cavity, occurs when bacteria in plaque and foods break down the tooth structure.  Foods and drinks that have sugars and carbohydrates in them cause changes in the mouth's acid levels.  Acids deteriorate the enamel, causing holes in the teeth.

A patient came in for a dental cleaning.  The dentists at Stuparich and Nouel Dental Associates noticed a large cavity on his lower right molar.  The tooth was extracted and a dental implant was placed.

Placing dental implants in areas of missing teeth is considered one of the most successful dental procedures.  Upper lateral teeth, which are next to the central teeth, are common teeth to be congenitally missing.  

When lateral teeth are missing, the best option is to place a dental implant with a crown in the area.  Often, orthodontics are necessary to move the surrounding teeth and create enough space for a dental implant.
